Wow! 3 Months is over!

I am so excited it is finally over!  For the past 8 years my husband has been a detective, this means Monday-Friday day shift hours,  no holidays or weekends, unless he gets called in.  In December 2016 he was promoted to sergeant, I was so proud of him.  This has been something he has been working towards for years.  With this promotion came some major changes for our household.  The first month he continued to work day shift, but had to work every other weekend.  After that he moved to his permanent shift, 3:00pm-3:00am , and every other weekend.  I work Sunday -Thursday 7:00am-3:00pm, this means I will only see him on his days off.  Sergeant Happy will get home around 3:30am (if he gets out on time), will sleep for a few hours, then needs to get up to get Ella off to school.  Logan and Mason start school earlier than Ella, the middle school and high school start an hour earlier than the grade schools.  Ella doesn’t get on the bus until 8:25am, which means that is when Sergeant Happy gets to go back to bed. Sergeant Happy then wakes up at 1:00pm to get ready for work.  You know what that is a recipe for??  Crabby Sergeant Happy!

In January they posted a detective sergeant position, my husband applied, and yes he got the job! That is two promotions within 3 months, I told you it was his calling.  Starting tomorrow Sergeant Happy is back on day shift!  YAY!  I know that I am very fortunate to be in the situation, because most LEO wives never get the chance to experience there husbands on days.  Yes I am very blessed, and our children are so excited to have dad back home in the evening.  With the day shift comes the dark side, the many hours of removing child pornography off of pedophiles phones, and computers.   On top of all his other cases he is in computer forensics, and child exploitation.  I couldn’t imagine seeing everything Sergeant Happy has to see on a daily bases. My job is to make our home his safe place, for him to come home, relax, and detox from his day/week.

Last night Sergeant Happy and myself took the kids to see the new Lego batman movie.  Yes, Logan our 15 year old son wanted to see this movie, because he loves batman.  What a cute movie and funny!  It had adult humor thrown in to keep adults entertained.  Right before the movie our daughter Ella felt really warm, I took her temp and of course 102.3!  We all just got over being sick for the past 3 weeks!  I gave Ella some Motrin, her temperature went down, so we went to the move.  It was a 6:40pm showing so we figured there won’t be as many people there, and we were right.  After the movie we instantly had to make a plan if Ella couldn’t  go to school tomorrow.  Sergeant Happy is off today so he would be home if she was sick.  Snow day, so no school for our kids!  Ella’s temp is normal today so she could of gone to school.  It seems like whenever Sergeant Happy or myself have a day off alone or together someone gets sick or there is no school.  I figured since he is home with the kids today this would save me from the multiple face times from our daughter, wrong!  The last one she whispered the whole time so her dad didn’t know she called me.

Did I say Sergeant Happy is the best?!?  He made sure to do as much as he could around the house, so I didn’t have much to do when I got home, he also had a note on top of my “cozy clothes”. This was great since after work I had to run to the Girl Scout store and pickup some cookies from the cookie cupboard, and then stop at the boy scout store where I dropped $170 on shirts, patches, and books.  Wow expensive!   I Arrived home after all that, made dinner, and then had to meet with 4 girl scout parents so they could finish paying for there cookies. This money was supposed to be turned in two weeks ago.  Like normal I had one not show, but I guess 12 out of 13 paid in full is awesome!  Now to get ready for our final cookie booth on Friday. While I am sitting in my car at Walgreens waiting for the final parent, that never showed, Sergeant Happy texted me.  My daughter saw his new haircut and told him that he should of had an emoji shaved in his head.  Wow where did all this emoji stuff come from?  Well now off to have some family time, and get kids to bed.

Let me introduce you to myself and my life:

Hi!  My name is Shelby.  I have been married for almost 18 years, 11 of those years my husband has been a LEO (law enforcement officer). I will be referring to my husband as Sergeant Happy.  Yes, he decided to join the police academy when I was pregnant with our middle child!  We have 3 kids, a son Logan (15), a son Mason (12), and a daughter Ella (6).  I work full time for a food service company, and have been there for 18 years, and just started college classes part time. I am an assistant girl scout leader, and cookie mom.   We also have all of our kids extra activities as well: Logan- Marching band, band, and boy scouts, Mason- Band, boy scouts, and baseball, Ella- girl scouts, and softball.  Let me just say life is busy!

When Sergeant Happy went into law enforcement, I couldn’t imagine what would come with that. It took me 9 years to figure some things out, and I am still learning everyday.  Did Sergeant Happy change when he became a deputy? Yes he did. Do I still love him like before he was a deputy, yes, even more!  Marriage isn’t easy to begin with, and you throw being married to a LEO in there, it can be very difficult.   There have been plenty of ups, and downs, but that happens in every marriage.  I have had to learn to share my husband with complete strangers.  I often have felt jealous, because he hurries to the aid of complete strangers, while sometimes my needs seems to come last every time.  This is a normal feeling.  Being a LEO isn’t just a job to Sergeant Happy, it’s a calling.  You have to be a very special person to do his job. It has taken me 9 years to learn empathy towards his career.  I now realize that he makes a lot of sacrifices for people he doesn’t know.  He often misses our kids events, cancels dates with me, and often goes on little sleep.  Does he want to do all of those things? No, but he needs to. If he doesn’t help people, then who will?  I don’t think my husband has slept good in years.  How could you with all the images and nightmares rolling around his head?  It wasn’t my calling to be a LEO, but it is my calling to be his Mrs. Happy, standing in the background taking care of business.  This is my life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I hope you will continue to read my blog, and please contact me if you wish.
